Viagara Information

What is Viagara used for?

Viagara is used to treat impotence in men. Viagara increases the body’s ability to achieve and maintain an erection during sexual stimulation. Viagara does not protect you from getting sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

How does sex affect your body?

When a man is sexually excited, the penis rapidly fills with more blood than usual. The penis then expands and hardens. This is called an erection. After the man is done having sex, this extra blood flows out of the penis into the body and the erection goes away.

Who should not take Viagara?

Men who are currently using medicines that contain nitrates, such as nitroglycerin should not use Viagara because taken together they can lower the blood pressure too much.
Viagara should not be used by children.

Is Viagara used in the treatment of female erectile dysfunction?

There are several medical research centers that are studying whether Viagara is a viable oral therapy for woman with erectile dysfunction. However, we know less about female erectile dysfunction than male erectile dysfunction. Research has always focused on male erectile dysfunction. Consequently, our ability to treat female erectile dysfunction is limited until we have a better understanding of the physiological processes causing female erectile dysfunction. This being said, some physicians are prescribing Viagara to their female patients. However, the FDA has not approved Viagara for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in women.

What side effects have been reported by patients since Viagara became available?

In patients taking Viagara, several heart-related side effects have been reported, including heart attack, sudden death, irregular heart rhythm, stroke, chest pain, and increased blood pressure. It is not possible to determine whether these events are directly related to Viagara, to sexual activity, to the patient’s heart condition, to a combination of these factors, or to other factors.

  • Because Viagara lowers blood pressure, your doctor will evaluate your overall medical condition to determine if Viagara, in combination with sexual activity, could adversely affect you.
  • Viagara can cause a rare but serious condition of prolonged erection (priapism). It is important to contact your health care provider immediately if your erection lasts longer than 4 hours.
  • Men for whom sexual activity is inadvisable may not be good candidates for Viagara.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking protease inhibitors for the treatment of HIV.

What are the General Precautions with Viagara?

  • You should have a complete medical history and exam to determine the cause of your impotence before taking Viagara.
  • Men who have medical conditions that may cause a sustained erection such as sickle cell anemia, leukemia or multiple myeloma or who have an abnormally shaped penis may not be able to take Viagara.
  • There are several medications that are known to interact with Viagara, so be sure to tell your doctor about all medications you are taking including those you can get without a prescription.
  • Viagara has not been studied with other treatments for impotence, so use in combination with other treatments is not recommended.
